While the macroeconomic backdrop remains consistent with low inflation, we believe global inflation has bottomed. Inflation should move modestly higher in the coming months, stabilizing at about 2.5% during 2H14. A return of sustained above-trend global growth (despite last quarter’s disappointment) should combine with anchored inflation expectations above actual levels to gradually turn the tide away from global disinflation. More immediately, a number of more transitory impulses should work toward lifting global inflation in the coming months. The most obvious is the imposition of the Japanese consumption tax, which should raise the level of Japanese consumer prices nearly 11% annualized this quarter.
