The focus will now turn towards the general elections (10 and 17 June) and whether the Socialist Party will be able to secure a majority or not. Before the second round, leaders of the Greens (E.Joly), the Left Front (J.-L.Melenchon) and the centrist (F.Bayrou) had called on supporters to vote for Mr Hollande, positioning themselves as possible coalition partners for the Socialists. Mr Bayrou even called for a national unity on election night. On the right side of the political spectrum, tensions are high within the UMP on whether or not to form an alliance with M.LePen’s Front National. However, as show by a recent poll, voters for both parties seem to be in favour of such an agreement.

Mr Hollande will take office on 16 May and will appoint a prime minister. A government is likely to be appointed shortly thereafter, but might be changed in June if it does not get the support from the new parliament. During his campaign, Mr Hollande said he would call for an extraordinary parliamentary session starting 3 July and ending 2 August in order to push through a first reform package (finance bill, tax reform, banking sector reform, cancellation of the 1.6pp VAT hike scheduled for October).
